On May 13, Pamela Hernandez graced the stage, brimming with joy and pride, to accept her Master’s degree from UNLV. As with many graduations, there were cheers, applause, and teary-eyed moments. But for Hernandez, an even more emotional surprise awaited at the end of her walk.

Little did she know that one of her biggest cheerleaders – her father, U.S. Navy Petty Officer Second-Class Douglas Hernandez – had crossed oceans and continents to be there in person. The moment his presence was announced, he navigated his way past the line of graduates to reach his daughter.
