A Year of Excellence: AFMC Fully Supporting the U.S. Space Force
The Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) today celebrated a milestone – one year of providing complete Servicing Major Command support to the U.S. Space Force (USSF). On June 1, 2022, AFMC reached its Full Operational Capability status in its supportive role for the USSF, signifying a successful year of collaboration.
Reinventing Major Command Roles
As the Servicing Major Command, AFMC is seamlessly undertaking the roles and responsibilities traditionally performed by a Major Command for Airmen supporting the USSF. These functions encompass various areas, including providing policy guidance, interpretation, and, when necessary, waiver authority; creating professional development opportunities and guidelines; offering developmental team representation; and fulfilling functional-specific roles.
Currently, AFMC is delivering high-quality services to approximately 8,800 Airmen assigned to Space Force installations and units.
Enhancing Communication and Support for Airmen and Guardians
With an ongoing commitment to efficient communication and support, AFMC is constantly exploring innovative methods to ensure Airmen and Guardians are well-informed about the assistance AFMC provides and receive regular updates about this support.
To facilitate this, AFMC recently introduced a new online resource designed to provide information and establish connections with functional personnel at AFMC. This new page on the Department of Defense’s milSuite site aims to bridge communication gaps between AFMC, Airmen, and Guardians. This online hub provides Servicing MAJCOM information and AFMC points-of-contact for mission support issues and questions. Only individuals with a DoD common access card can gain entry to the milSuite site.
From Initial to Full Operational Capability
AFMC initially declared Operational Capability on October 1, 2021, before reaching Full Operational Capability as the Servicing Major Command for Airmen supporting the Space Force on June 1, 2022. This unique Servicing MAJCOM structure, created by the Department of the Air Force in October 2020, ensures Airmen supporting the Space Force receive the same force development opportunities and functional and administrative support as those at U.S. Air Force installations.
In terms of personnel-related issues, Airmen at USSF installations continue to receive service from their local Military Personnel Flight and Civilian Personnel Office, with the Air Force Personnel Center continuing to provide service to all Airmen at Space Force installations.
