In a landmark announcement from the White House Rose Garden, President Joe Biden has put forward his nomination for the 21st Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. If confirmed, Brown would be the first Air Force general to hold the position since 2005 and only the second African American, following in the steps of Army Gen. Colin Powell.

In a White House Rose Garden announcement, Biden called Brown “a proud, butt-kicking American airman” and an operational leader with intimate knowledge of how the U.S. joint force operates. Brown is currently Air Force chief of staff.

Currently serving as the Air Force’s Chief of Staff, Brown is globally recognized as an exceptional operational leader with a profound understanding of the U.S. joint force operations. As per Biden, Brown has earned the respect of all U.S. armed forces and is seen as a reliable partner and seasoned strategist by global allies and partners.

Gen. Brown’s proven strategic prowess is evident in his contributions towards counteracting ISIS threats in the Middle East and future-proofing our Air Force in the Indo-Pacific. Known for his cool composure under pressure and effective leadership skills, Brown cultivates a culture of teamwork and trust, always aiming for excellence.

In President Biden’s words, Brown’s competitive spirit is a significant asset for a commander-in-chief. With an approach encapsulated as “accelerate, change or lose,” Brown demonstrates the urgent need for adaptation and speed in today’s rapidly shifting global landscape.

To ensure the safety, prosperity, and security of the American people, the nation needs to maintain a combat-ready force capable of thwarting any potential threats, manage competition with China, and address renewed aggression in Europe. Gen. Brown, with his astute strategic vision and commitment to integrity, is well-positioned to guide the U.S. military through these challenges.

As the U.S. military approaches several noteworthy anniversaries in 2023, Biden underscored the principles of equality and diversity that fortify our armed forces. Celebrating the power of diversity, Biden affirmed the role of the U.S. armed forces as a potent symbol of equality.

“Our world is at an inflection point, where the decisions we make today are going to determine the course of our world for decades to come,” President Biden said. “And to keep American people safe, prosperous and secure, we have to move fast and adapt quickly. We have to maintain a combat-credible force capable of defeating any potential threat. And we have to manage our competition with China and meet the reality of renewed aggression in Europe.”

Backing the nomination, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III lauded Gen. Brown as an exceptional joint warfighter and strategic leader. Highlighting his distinguished service as a pilot, commander, and his current role leading the U.S. Air Force, Austin asserted Brown’s ability to adeptly navigate today’s most daunting national security challenges.

Lastly, both President Biden and Secretary Austin expressed their heartfelt thanks to Gen. Brown’s family for their unwavering support. They also commended the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, for his invaluable contributions to the nation and the military.

In this new era of security challenges, the selection of Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff exemplifies a commitment to strategic excellence, diversity, and relentless pursuit of national security.
