Washington, D.C. – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is set to broaden the scope of healthcare services available to family members and primary caregivers under the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). Starting at the end of May, these enhancements will include the introduction of audio-only telehealth, extended mental health care, and access to contraceptive services.

VA Under Secretary for Health, Shereef Elnahal, emphasizes the commitment to providing world-class care to our nation’s heroes and their close support networks. “Expanding these services through CHAMPVA is a crucial part of our ongoing effort to ensure that beneficiaries receive high-value care whenever and wherever needed,” Elnahal stated.

Key Updates to CHAMPVA Benefits:

  • Expanded Telehealth Access: Beneficiaries can now utilize audio-only telehealth services, improving access to care especially for those in rural areas. This update is retroactive, covering services provided since May 12, 2020, with claims eligible for filing until November 26, 2024.
  • Increased Mental Health and Substance Use Coverage: There will no longer be a cap on the number of visits for mental health and substance abuse services. Additionally, CHAMPVA is removing the need for pre-authorizations for outpatient mental health services beyond 23 visits per year or more than two sessions per week.
  • No More Deductibles for Contraceptive Services: The VA is also removing deductibles and cost-sharing for all necessary contraceptive services and products approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Currently serving over 737,500 beneficiaries, CHAMPVA provides comprehensive health care coverage to eligible spouses, surviving spouses, children, and primary family caregivers of veterans. The program supports a wide range of medical needs including mental health services, prescription medications, and maternity care.
