Arlington, VA – As we approach Memorial Day weekend this year, an important upgrade has been made to the National Cemetery Administration’s (NCA) online memorial platform, Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM). The platform now encompasses 27 cemeteries managed by the Department of Defense, including the prestigious Arlington National Cemetery.
The inclusion of these new cemeteries enhances the VLM database with more than 300,000 individual interactive Veteran pages, augmenting the already existing 4.5 million pages. This expansion seeks to provide a more detailed and holistic online memorial experience for users.
The improvements extend beyond the number of memorial pages, making it simpler and quicker for users to locate their Veteran’s pages. A newly added feature enables VLM visitors to record Personal Achievements on a Veteran’s page, supplementing the existing Military Achievements. This gives users the opportunity to celebrate significant life events of their Veteran, such as graduations, marriages, births of children, retirements, and more.
“These new improvements to VLM are a direct result of feedback from family members and the public,” said Danny Devine, executive director of NCA’s Office of Engagement and Memorial Innovation, the office that manages VLM. “We’ll continue to improve the VLM Customer Experience to make the site more user friendly and the content submission process easier.”
Veteran pages are filled with military service and cemetery information drawn from VA records. This publicly accessible data includes service branch logo, dates of birth and death, rank, war period, decorations, emblem of belief, and cemetery specifics like address and phone number, interactive map, gravesite, and interment date.
Users can engage with the platform in a variety of ways, including submitting comments, images, biographical information, and historical documents; creating a timeline of their Veteran’s military service and personal achievements; and generating a Word Cloud that represents their Veteran. Users can also share the Veteran’s profile via email or social media, and “Follow a Veteran” to receive email notifications when new content is added to the Veteran’s page. All user content is reviewed by VLM moderators to ensure it complies with the VLM User Policy and is respectful towards Veterans.
VLM customer support is readily available to assist with user queries from Monday to Friday (excluding federal holidays) between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Central Time. You can reach them at vlm@va.gov or call at 1-866-245-1490.
