Washington, DC – Senator Tommy Tuberville, an ex-college football coach who transitioned into politics without any personal military service experience, made a bold assertion in a televised conversation, claiming that “no one is more military than me.”
In a dialogue with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, the Alabama senator highlighted his father’s long-standing military career and asserted his staunch support for the armed forces.
During the interview, Tuberville’s remarks were triggered by Collins questioning his solo move to impede promotions for numerous senior military personnel. This move was seen as a protest against the Department of Defense’s policy of offering leave and reimbursement for service members seeking out-of-state abortions.
In response to Collins’ inquiries, Tuberville reaffirmed his stance, asserting that his blockade would not have been initiated if he thought it detrimental to recruitment or military readiness.
However, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin previously indicated to senators in March that refusing promotion recommendations could result in an adverse ripple effect throughout the forces, undermining readiness, as reported by Politico.
In addition to the promotions issue, Collins questioned Tuberville about white nationalism in America and whether individuals identifying as white nationalists should be permitted to serve in the military.
Tuberville maintained his absolute opposition to racism during the interview but refrained from denouncing white nationalism as fundamentally racist.
Responding to Collins’ view on the issue, he simply stated, “Well, that’s your opinion.”
